Happy Veteran's Day ๐บ๐ธ
-
I want to wish everyone a Happy Veteran's Day, and to everyone they know who has served for our country. I want to take this day to remember my good friend Robert.

My grandfather served for 17 years in the U.S. Army, so today is a special day for him and our family. Happy Veteranโs Day and a deep thank you to all those who have served on this site

@508 I've always felt a bit conflicted (as @QuantumKat posted in the NBA thread) about these days.
Growing up in a military town I've probably known more members of the military than most here (if they weren't in the military themselves) - closest to home are my brother who served two tours in Iraq and came back with a bronze star and some pretty sad stories, my grandfather who was a colonel and served in Vietnam, my uncle who is a retired general. along with that most of my friends growing up had family in the military, and a lot of them went into the military themselves.
fun fact: I know General Flynn personally- his son went to my high school and he was on the baseball team with me for three years.
Anyways despite all of this - and despite knowing people who didn't come back in our post 9/11 wars - I still think it's hard to just say "Happy Veterans Day" because of war itself and the way the military industrial complex has hijacked our country's economy and politics, and because of the ways that we've glorified and fetishized the military in the years since 9/11 in our culture to perpetuate said military industrial complex.

@jdealla I feel the same way about war but I respect the veterans. All the bullshit that comes with war I blame the government not the people on the ground. I grew up with my friend Robert, went to elementary, middle and high school with him. He always wanted to be a police officer, firefighter and in the military growing up and he quickly served right after high school. Unfortunately he was killed in Kabul during a suicide bombing while training other officers. He was just 20 years old.
