Is “Cancel culture” dangerous for society?
-
I want to know what you guys think. It seems that this new era has brought about this new term and that seemingly nobody is immune to it. Do you guys think that cancel culture is going to end up doing more harm than good? That anything you say can and will be used against you to ruin not only your career…but your life? I believe that accountability is needed but at what point is that line drawn where it goes from holding someone accountable to lynch mobbing them and destroying everything they worked for? Is our freedom of speech in danger? Joe Rogan has been the top podcaster for quite sometime and he’s on the verge of losing it all due to cancel culture. Is this setting a precedent in America where the things you say, even if they aren’t meant with malice can inevitably tarnish and ruin you forever?
-
Don’t flame me but yes I believe it is. If you’re a repeat offender then yes, you should be punished. People make mistakes. Not saying that they aren’t consequences for those mistakes just saying people deserve 2nd chances…

@quantumkat In his defense I would think he’s referring to the Chappelle skit
-
Racists and sexual predators all deserve to be cancelled

@quantumkat In his defense I would think he’s referring to the Chappelle skit
He has 70 different instances of using the word. They aren't all about the Chappelle skit
-
@quantumkat yeah, this is some damning shit…even though he was using it in context and not actually saying it to or about someone. But either way, this doesn’t look good at all. That’s why I’m asking, even though he’s not using it directly towards someone…he shouldn’t be using the word at all in any context. Do you think something like this is grounds for being canceled, even if it wasn’t meant to be racially degrading?
-
-
Fuck Joe Rogan never tuned into him even though I find his topics interesting. Idk how people can defend this. Also cancel culture doesn’t work most of the time. Things have to be really egregious like in the case of EDP.
-
@quantumkat him and Chappelle are like best buds and travel/tour a lot. You can tell from all instances in the video that he was bringing up the skit bc he liked it so much
I’m just saying lol
-
Lmao y’all niggas not bout to have have Rogan off UFC commentary lol I’m ready to go to war behind that one
-
-
-
@quantumkat I’m blind
-
I’m older than (maybe?) most on this site. I think it largely depends on what content is being “cancelled”
Largely it seems that most of the world has lost the ability to take things with a pinch of salt. If you don’t like it, it must be cancelled forgetting whether others are interested by it.
To me it feels like comedy won’t exist in fifty years because people now try and find a way to be offended instead of living life
-
As regards the question about cancel culture though, I generally agree with @kmart
Most of the time it doesn't work. They only get canceled for egregious crimes. Ironically, most of the victims of cancel culture are on the Left. Like Al Franken. Meanwhile Donald Trump became President, led a coup, and is trying to regain power.
-
@kmart wait, cancel culture doesn’t work?
-
Cancel culture is right wing propaganda. All these entertainers who supposedly get "canceled" and "silenced" sure seem to have an awful lot of platforms to talk about their supposed cancelation. If anything, being a "victim" of cancel culture just solidifies your hardcore audience in perpetuity and gets those fighting against this made up bogeyman to stan for you and purchase your shit. You got "canceled"? Congrats, you're a martyr and you didn't even need to die. Now you get to peddle whatever you do and sell to a whole new fan base. Seems like a pretty sweet deal.

Well recently we’ve had artist like Doja Cat & Dababy who have caught heavy flak & people tried to cancel them. Only for their music to still be all over the place. That’s why I say it only works in certain cases
-
@quantumkat I don't know this meme so I'm gonna take it as disrespect
@QuantumKat CANCELED
-
@nickstank it just means THIS.
As in, I agree.
-
@quantumkat My man!
@QuantumKat UN-CANCELED
-
@nickstank i disagree, take Chrisette Michele for example. Her career hasn’t recovered at all ever since she decided to sing for Trump at his inauguration. Perhaps the bigger the star the lesser the blow, but that isn’t the case for everyone. Some people get canceled and don’t ever recover.
-
@kmart I don’t know if you’re aware but Da Baby’s numbers have plummeted, he also lost millions in touring and that’s his biggest revenue stream…he hasn’t really recovered because every song he’s put out since then hasn’t done half of what his songs prior were doing.
-
Tory Lanez as well people tried to cancel him after allegedly shooting Meg the stallion. His fanbase & teenage boys alike rallied behind him. I know I’m only speaking in music/entertainment, it may be different in other spaces but idk
-
Yeah, did she really expect to maintain her audience (mostly Black) when she sang for Trump? lol
-
@kmart i don’t recall anyone trying to cancel him, i just remember people not being able to verify if Meg was telling the truth or not…and it turned out she was lying.

Holy W
-
@quantumkat that’s my point though, should her political choice or affiliation (alliance?) be grounds for cancellation?
-
I wouldn't support a singer who sang for Hitler, so yes.

I know his pockets hurt a bit but the streams & song numbers I can’t really say that. He currently has 37 mil Spotify listeners & just had a number 1 video with youngboy on YouTube. I think the controversy fueled some of his audience although he backpedaled on that. I just don’t think the cancellation was enough to really stall his career.

Didn't that dude say gay people were Dirty? Seems pretty deserving
-
The problem I have with Cancel Culture is that it often doesn't go far enough and sometimes it needs better aim.
There's a lot of people who need to be canceled and haven't been lol
-
@quantumkat so Trump burned and gassed millions of Jews? Obama called for the bombings that murdered countless women and children…but you support him. What’s the difference?
-
@12th Who says I support Obama LOL
-
@sssnaps no…he did not.
See this is the issue with cancel culture, Niggas don’t even have the facts straight
-
@quantumkat you support the left, he’s the left.

He called them nasty and doubled down on it. My facts are straight,
-
@12th ehh... that's slippery...
There's a ton of people on the Left I absolutely do not support
-
@sssnaps give me the exact quote…verbatim, not your recollection.
-
@rodsquad said in Is “Cancel culture” dangerous for society?:
@quantumkat In his defense I would think he’s referring to the Chappelle skit
Nigga baited one of his host to say the n word then laughed
Also said when he was around a lot of black ppl it felt like planet of the apes
My thing is he did it in 70 episodes why now
-

Ok
-
I'll just say this... if you do some sus shit in PUBLIC... what you do behind the scenes is usually orders of magnitude worse.
It's the tip of the iceberg.
-
@quantumkat but i mean singing at an inauguration for some money and saying you outright support someone’s policies is slippery too right? People just assumed the worst of her and canceled her…
-
@12th said in Is “Cancel culture” dangerous for society?:
and it turned out she was lying.
Since when he literally shot at the ground and it hit her leg ie he shot her the case is still pending
-
@12th inaugurations are celebrations of someone winning an election... seems like an endorsement...
-
I don’t get the point of this thread lmao
-
@sssnaps fair enough
-
@ogxsuave the fuck? Nigga i asked a question. What are your thoughts on cancel culture? What’s there not to get?
