New KDot 5/13 - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
-
@12th Savior is one of my favorites.
I like United grief, worldwide steppers, Father Time, Purple Hearts, count me out, savior
-
@hollygrovemikey Mr. Morale is another one, straight fire.
-
@12th yeah It’s growing on me… I think it’s mostly the production that turned me off the album. My production style that I like to listen to is more like the beat on “Father Time”.. He doesn’t have much of that sound on here
-
@hollygrovemikey aight so I’m done listening, this isn’t a “bangers” album… this is more of an art piece of someone purging a lot of suppressed issues through a stream of consciousness. The shit he’s unpacking is HEAVY heavy issues. Mother i sober for instance might be one of the most vulnerable rap songs I’ve ever heard. For him to put that shit out there, Is just wow…that Shit took heart.
The track where he’s talking about how he felt the first time he fucked a white chick and how the ancestors watching him felt like retaliation…bruh that shit hit me different, i know that exact feeling. First time i smashed a white chick i felt like i was…man, i just know that feeling. It’s something that’s hard to explain when you grow up in a household where your momma is like “you better not bring no white girl home”
These are heavy topics…really heavy. This is most non banger having Album to date, but it’s by far his most artistic. This Shit is what Andre 3000 would’ve made had he been a kid from Compton. This is some love below in LA Shit.

More artistic than TPAB? That man interviewed 2pac on the outro.. so that’s a huge compliment
-
Fuck my loud ass job. Difficult as hell to hear lyrics, gonna have to listen tomorrow
-
@hollygrovemikey TPAB is definitely his most digestible “artistic” experience. This one is more of a vulnerability piece, a little harder to process and breakdown…which to me is the highest form of artistic expression. When an artist forces you to pay closer attention not with your ears but with your thoughts…that Shit is a different level of artistry. That’s how i feel about this album.
-
This album is really good
But
I'm missing some of the replay value damn had. I had humble on my playlist since it came out to this november -

Facts. Only these kind of songs get added to the playlist, most other songs are only listened to then forgotten once the same type of song comes out the next week lol
-
@12th It does make a difference listening to this album through my car stereo and not through my iPhone at 1am. The first 9 songs sound significantly better, but I’m still not as crazy about this album as some of the reviews I saw. I’m going to say I like every song except we cry together, but some of these aren’t songs.. it’s more like spoken word
-
Very vulnerable album. On my second listen now. It’s Kendrick doing what Kendrick does which is invoke thought and addressing issues he sees through music.
Twitter gonna go up in flames over his R Kelly bar and Auntie Diaries cause people lack reading comprehension.
-
Lawd have mercy....
This album isReminds me of SO MANY old school songs (like T.R.O.Y., C.R.E.A.M., The Message) in regard to effective delivery of a point and learning from your life/surroundings. Then, it just brings back those songs that are supposed to give you feels and chills
To most in this current gen of music it may not be for them, but I'll honestly say if you loved:
The Love Below, TPAB, Aquenami, All Eyez On Me 36 Chambers, Electric Relaxation, Like Water for Chocolate, even Troubleman (the song)....You will like this album
Sometimes your ears need a deep massage not just a lovetap..Music is an artform and life...Kendrick reminded us of that with this

Auntie Diaries-Mr. Morale-Mother I Sober is a crazy run. I love Pharrell on production.
I think I will eventually love this album overall
-
Great album. Very different.
Won't have the same replay value that GKMC and TPAB did for me, but those are near impossible to outdo imo.
Father Time is so fire, I'm a massive Sampha fan too.
-
-
The album now starting to grow on me. We Cry Together is that shit.
-
@johnnyhimrod I’m not going to call it a bad album, but I’ll likely never go back to it. I’ll save 4 songs from it on to my phone and move on. The post I read on Twitter about the album say it’s a classic and art etc etc, but I don’t let suburban back pack kids influence my thinking on what is a classic rap album or not.
-
@hollygrovemikey let it breathe bruh lmao it’s been two days
I listened to half of it Friday and am just going to return to it when I feel like I’ll have clean ears
-
@hollygrovemikey i feel you, overall its not hittin for me but there's some good ones on there.
-
How's everyone feeling about this album with some more time to listen and reflect? I took a while to form my opinion, the album was just so dense.
For me, this album is on par with GKMC and TPAB. Father Time, We Cry Together, and Mother I Sober are all masterpieces IMO.
For "Bangers" I feel like N95, Die Hard, Rich Spirit, Silent Hill, Savior, and Mr. Morale are all incredibly catchy.
I even love both interludes, they are great mini songs.
I think this album is going to take some time to grow on people, sort of like TPAB did. I'm guessing it's going to dominate the awards cycle this year, but we'll see.
On an album with an uncountable amount of amazing lyrics I think my favorite comes from the last song "Mirror"
"Sorry I didn't save the world my friend. I was too busy building mine again".
That line really feels like it sums up the whole album.
I love Kendrick, and I'm so happy we got such a personal album from him.
-
@jc9289 i think it’s a masterpiece personally, i listen to it daily and love it more every time i hear it. Mr. Morale is my shit. It’s such an interesting album, it’s not commercial but it’s not underground… it’s just art, and that’s why i appreciate it so much.
-
@12th Me too, I can't stop listening to it. I just have it on in the background all the time, or I'm watching videos of peopling reacting to it.
-
@jc9289 yeah i let it run while I’m at work, it’s background music while I’m working on my projects and it just vibes. You get inspirational vibrations from it, can’t explain it. I just really love the album.

I still haven't had the time sit and fully listen yet, but the production is top notch so far. I'm a "make you think rap" kinda guy though.
